Tim-

This site is dedicated to deer and deer habitat management. I would encourage you to read as much as possible to learn about providing what deer need, as well as picking up some harvest management suggestions to ensure you have and hold good deer on your property for years to come.

Great information! I am looking at turning our property into a hunter's paradise. The property is located in south central Kentucky and is approximately 1,500 acres. Mostly woodlands with maybe 125 tillable acres and another 100 acres in thickets and grown up fields. This coming year will be the first year we will have corn grown on the property in many years. Any suggestions on how to manage to get nice bucks and does and how many big bucks should I expect to harvest each year?

Gary, it sounds like your property is dominated by trees. Although trees are great, opening up some areas will allow forbs and grasses to grow. Deer do not eat much grass, but establishing some open areas will promote grass for bedding and fawning cover and allow high-protein forbs the sunlight they need to grow. You will also get great browse growth along the edges of the openings.

Often times, too many trees shades things out and makes for very little forage near the ground -- and that's where the deer are found. I will email you some info on native grass and forb mixes.

I am trying to manage 570 acres in East Texas. I feel I need to establish open grass areas for cover, etc. I am trying to find out which native grasses to plant and where to find a good source. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

This is the most informative site on deer management that I have ever seen. I wish we had one based closer to me. I'm in the Ozarks, southern Missouri.
